Orlando Pirates FC head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has detailed the club's careful management of winger Oswin Appollis, describing the player as a 'diamond' they are protecting. The 25-year-old Moroccan international has seen limited minutes this season as the club balances his workload across multiple competitions.

Ouaddou explained the decision is rooted in Appollis's recent schedule and his importance to the team. "But we must not forget that Appollis is human. He's not a robot," the coach said. "Appollis played a fantastic season in his first season at Pirates." The winger arrived from Polokwane City ahead of the 2025/26 campaign and helped the club win the Betway Premiership title in his debut season. Ouaddou, who played for Morocco for six years himself, highlighted the player's efforts at the 2026 FIFA World Cup and subsequent qualifiers as factors contributing to fatigue.

Appollis's impact from the bench

Despite the reduced playing time, Appollis has made key contributions when called upon. He returned to action in the second half of the recent Soweto Derby against Kaizer Chiefs, where he had a goal disallowed for offside. He also made impactful substitute appearances in the MTN8 final. In nine Betway Premiership matches this season, he has scored two goals and provided three assists, though he has yet to register in cup or CAF Champions League play.

His role is seen as increasingly important following the departure of Relebohile Mofokeng, with Appollis expected to shoulder greater creative responsibility. Ouaddou described him as a 'masterclass' and one of the best players in South Africa.

Context of a title charge

The management of Appollis comes as Orlando Pirates sit second in the Betway Premiership, just one point behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns with 25 points from nine games. The team is on a five-match winning streak, having most recently beaten Kaizer Chiefs 2-1 on October 31. They have scored 21 goals while conceding only two this league season, claiming a formidable goal difference of +19. Top scorer Tshepang Moremi has five goals in seven appearances.

The club's next challenge is a home fixture against 10th-placed Golden Arrows on November 28, a match where Appollis could see increased involvement. Ouaddou confirmed the winger will return to play soon, with the club aiming to benefit from his full availability during a congested period that includes the Carling Knockout Cup quarter-final against Sekhukhune United.
