Orlando Pirates are using a contract delay strategy to keep captain Nkosinathi Sibisi motivated and accountable as the season intensifies. The 29-year-old defender, whose current deal expires at the end of the campaign, has not yet signed an extension despite being handed the armband this season.
Former Pirates goalkeeper Jackson Mabokgwane explained the club's deliberate approach. He stated that waiting to secure Sibisi’s future keeps him pushing until the very end, adding that offering a contract too early can diminish a player's hunger. Mabokgwane pointed to winger Deon Hotto as a precedent, having signed an extension only after waiting until the end of his previous contract.
Sibisi's key role
Sibisi arrived from Golden Arrows in 2022 and has since won eight trophies with the Buccaneers. As a senior player and central figure, the technical staff relies on him to stabilise a defence that blends emerging young talents with experience. His leadership is seen as vital for the club's pursuit of silverware both domestically and on the continent.
The timing is significant, with Sibisi able to sign a pre-contract with other clubs once the January transfer window opens. This maintains pressure and ensures his focus remains on the pitch. The team's overall approach to contract renewals is designed to keep players driven and performing.
This strategy unfolds as Orlando Pirates mount a serious title challenge. They sit second in the Premier Soccer League with 25 points from nine games, just one point behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns. The team is on a five-game winning run, having scored 21 goals and conceded only twice this season. Their latest victory was a 2-1 Soweto Derby win over Kaizer Chiefs on 31 October, with goals from Yanela Mbuthuma and Tshepang Moremi. This followed a 3-0 win over Milford FC on 27 October, part of a sequence of five consecutive wins.
Sibisi will be central to their next test, a home match against his former club Golden Arrows on 28 November. Arrows currently sit tenth in the standings. The fixture is part of a key period where every point matters in a tight title race, with top scorer Tshepang Moremi contributing five goals so far. The club's leadership continues to blend youth with experience, a transformation where Sibisi's ongoing contribution remains essential.
