Orlando Pirates held talks with Cape Town City FC over the potential signing of 18-year-old attacking midfielder Emille Witbooi during the recent transfer window. The move was considered as the Buccaneers sought to reinforce their squad following the departure of Relebohile Mofokeng to Royale Union Saint-Gilloise.

Cape Town City chairman John Comitis confirmed the discussions, which occurred as Pirates looked to bolster their title-chasing side. The club currently sits second in the Premier Soccer League with 22 points from eight matches. However, no agreement was reached as Orlando Pirates were unwilling to meet the reported €1 million valuation, approximately R18.7 million, set by City.

No deal for promotion push

With no deal concluded, Cape Town City decided to retain Witbooi to assist their push for promotion back to the PSL. Comitis stated the team is now settled and focusing on their matches game by game, with nothing further happening regarding the transfer for the current season.

Despite the collapsed move, interest in the young talent has not faded. Comitis indicated there is still significant interest in Witbooi and a deal could still be revived before the season ends. The player himself was reportedly eager to join Orlando Pirates, viewing the move as a potential stepping stone to a career abroad. City remains confident they will eventually receive their asking price for the player.

Orlando Pirates continue their strong league form, having won four of their last five matches. Their next fixture is a key home encounter against Kaizer Chiefs on 31 October.
