Former Orlando Pirates striker Andries Sebola has called for patience with new signing Sebastian Pedersen, who has made just four substitute appearances since his off-season move. The 27-year-old Norwegian, nicknamed 'Baby Haaland', is still adapting to the physical and tactical demands of South African football. The team's current league standing of second place with 22 points from seven wins and a draw in eight games provides a stable environment for this adaptation.
Sebola, a club legend, believes Pedersen will deliver if given time and a gradual introduction. "Let’s give him time; it is not easy to come from where he was to acclimatise," Sebola said. He added that Pedersen is hungry and his movement is good, but questioned whether he is receiving adequate service from teammates. The former striker is confident the player will rise to the occasion and provide competition for the Buccaneers' other forwards, including the team's current top scorer T. Moremi, who has four goals this season.
Adaptation period key
Coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has previously noted that Pedersen arrived not at full match fitness, which has contributed to his limited role. He has been unable to secure starts even when primary striker Evidence Makgopa was injured. Sebola pointed to a history of foreign strikers at the club needing time, referencing past signings like Bienvenu Eva Nga and Jean-Marc Makusu who had minimal impact. "When they signed him, they saw the future." Sebola stated.
Title chase provides context
The call for patience comes as Orlando Pirates sit second in the Premier Soccer League, just one point behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns. The Buccaneers have 22 points from eight games, claiming the league's best defensive record with only one goal conceded. Their recent form shows four wins and one loss from their last five matches, and they are on a two-game winning run following a 1-0 victory over African Stars last Friday where T. Moremi scored the winner. This strong position makes every squad member's contribution vital in a tight title race.
Pedersen's next opportunity to impress could come in the iconic Soweto Derby. Orlando Pirates host rivals Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday 31 October in a fixture that always carries immense weight. Kaizer Chiefs currently sit fifth in the table. With the team in such a strong league position, integrating a new striker who can contribute goals could be a decisive factor in their silverware ambitions.
