Milford coach says belief came from opening day loss to Orlando Pirates

Milford FC head coach Pupuma says his team's belief to compete in the top flight was forged in a 2-0 opening day defeat to Orlando Pirates FC. The champions' victory on 15 September gave the newly-promoted side a key reference point for the season ahead.

Milford have since taken 11 points from seven league games to climb to fifth in the standings. Their form includes a 5-1 win over Richards Bay last Sunday, a match relocated to Durban's Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium due to a PSL suspension of the uMhlathuze Sports Complex.

Pupuma expressed frustration over the venue change, believing a derby in Richards Bay would have drawn 8,000 fans. He is happier with the cohesion of a squad largely unchanged from the promotion campaign, viewing it as key to maintaining their level.

"The first game against Pirates gave us the confidence and the belief that we can compete in this division," Pupuma said. "We gave the defending champions a few headaches on that day."

He added, "Fortunately for me, these boys have been playing alongside one another for a long time and they would do anything for each other."

While Milford build on that early test, Orlando Pirates continue their strong defence of the title. They are currently second in the Premier Soccer League with 13 points from five games, claiming a recent form of four wins and a draw.
